I cannot emphasize enough that… today matters. Too many people think it is too late to start a journey to achieve something they want. Feeling too old or feeling like it is too late, are common fears for many. You only live once (YOLO) and need to act today. In order for you to achieve your goals, you will first need to understand what your goals are. The sooner you realize what your goals are, the sooner you can start acting on those goals. The intention of this blog is to convince you to start putting efforts into reaching your goals today.
In early 2015, I had been working as a professional for over 7 years and felt pretty comfortable with where my career was. There was no driving forces pushing me to go back to school and get a graduates degree. There was a program with my employer, which allowed me to go to school and receive $10,000 reimbursement per year. I also knew if I wanted to receive a management position, a graduates degree could only help. Without delay, I studied for the GRE, took the exam, applied to the university of my choice, was accepted, and started my coursework. In Fall of 2017, I earned my graduates degree and felt pretty good about it. If I did not start when I did, I could still be thinking about starting. I am just glad I did it and completed it.
For quite some time in college, I wanted to have my own business. The hope was to start a business and generate money to support my lifestyle until I started working after I graduated from college. Without delaying too long, I started a business with my business partner and immediately generated money. We have been running this business for over 10 years with moderate success. This business has helped me network with many local businesses. Without starting the business when we did, we may still have been only thinking about starting a business. The next step is to push the business further and generate more money.
In 2012, I left my job as a chemist due to multiple reasons I will not discuss here. I knew I was not happy with the company I worked for and wanted to make the change sooner rather than later. Without another job to go to, I took the leap of faith and put in my two weeks notice. Between jobs, I spent the majority of my time working on my business. Eventually, I did end up getting a better job and ended up doing pretty well. If I did not leave the company I was not happy with, I may have still been there today and not been very happy. Many of the good things that have happened to me in my life because I left, may not have happened.
You need to understand today matters. There is nothing you can do about the past, but you can make decisions today that will affect your future. If you want to achieve a degree (i.e., BS, BA, MS, pH.D, etc) and you have not yet started, you absolutely need to start going through the motions to get the ball rolling. Your future self will thank you.
Understand you cannot always get everything done today, so you may need to create a to-do-list with dates you will hold yourself accountable for. Continue pushing yourself forward each day closer to reaching your goal. As you are getting closer 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%… don’t stop and keep moving until your goal is 100% complete. It will be the todays where you get all your stuff done. It is the present where you are cognizant and able to act. Today matters!
