I have trouble taking a day off because it feels like a waste of time. I have a lot of work I need to get done and want to use every second I have getting it done. Sometimes I think sleep is also a waste of time, but I know I could not function without it. Similar to sleep, I need to have time away from work to reenergize and feel refreshed. If we do not take time for ourselves, then we are going to operate at less than 100%. Food is another critical requirement to seep us alive and well. There have been times in my life when I was overwhelmed and felt completely exhausted. This is not a good feeling at all. I needed to take sometime off to refresh myself. It was a time to think about things other than work. When I went back to work, I was refreshed and ready to work. I was able to get more done in a shorter period of time. I also was making better decisions with a clear mind.
It sounds simple, but I think we need to remind ourselves of the importance of taking time for ourselves. We are not machines that can continue working 24/7. We cannot just swap out parts and keep going. Our body parts are not exchangeable (for the most part) and we need to take care of them. This includes our brain, which will allow us to work smarter and not harder. On a day off, you may want to watch TV, sit out on your deck, walk on the beach, or maybe something else you personally enjoy. All of these things are acceptable as long as you feel relaxed and stress-free. On my days off, I like to lay back and really appreciate life. If I can get down to the beach, I will go there to walk on the beach and enjoy the beach experience. If I cannot make it down to the beach, I will walk my dog down to the lake nearby my house and take in all nature has to offer. I cannot emphasize enough how important days off are.
As we know, decision making, speed, and accountability are three very important parts in achieving success. Each of these parts require you to be competent and fully aware of your surroundings. If you are overly worked and tired, you are not going to be able to successfully make good decisions with speed. I would still think you will be accountable for your mistakes even if you say you had no energy from being overworked. These are just a few things we should think about. Make sure you get enough sleep, healthy food, and relaxation to prevent yourself from overworking.
